Homage

Vincent Adams

Erika keeps a shrine to her past military life on a shelf beside her bed. The four badges you see at the top are from the 1st Calvary Division. Directly below that is her dress 1st Calvary hat and ceremonial stirrup. Immediate left of the stirrup is a framed “Soldier Statement” certificate. To the right of the hat is a picture of Erika and her first husband, and below that is a picture of a friend. Sitting directly centered on the shelf
is a specialty holder, used to display coins given to soldiers
who provided outstanding support. Coins, sometimes called “challenge coins”, prove membership in a unit or career field. Coins enhance morale, and are usually presented by a high- ranking officer. It is considered to be a great honor to receive a challenge coin. To the right of the coin display is an artistically painted version of the American flag, and the aforementioned 5.56 NATO round. Behind that is a leather bound photo album she purchased in Iraq. To the left of the coin display is an unused Pepsi can labeled in Arabic. Beside the soda can are two miniature plastic models, of military combat soldiers in various action poses, with an American flag.

With hands trembling, Erika grasps and holds a leather bound photo album she purchased while serving in Iraq. (bottom left)
