Pittsburgh's East Liberty is undergoing major economic and social changes, which are the source of much controversy. Its history reveals peaks and valleys in its success as a business and residential community. In the early- to mid-1900s, East Liberty was widely considered one of the most vibrant commercial districts and wealthiest suburbs of Pittsburgh. Today, depending on who you ask East Liberty is considered an up-and-coming area, on its way to matching its prosperity of the past; or it is a dangerous and run-down neighborhood; or it is a prime example of gentrification in American society. Regardless of these opinions, East Liberty's people and its landscape are experiencing a dramatic transition -- these images serve to narrate these changes.
