This project documents a portion of Kansas City Missouri's Wendell Phillips neighborhood. This section of neighborhood is demarcated by 26th street to the North, 27th street to the South, Brooklyn Avenue to the West, and Prospect Avenue to the East. The State of Missouri has implemented Eminent Domain to buy out the residents and landowners. Once all homes are vacant the area will be redeveloped into the Kansas City Police Department's East Patrol Headquarters and Crime Lab. For decades, Prospect Avenue has been a hotspot for violence, prostitution, and drug use. The City hopes that the presence of a Police Department will create a viable, safe area for economic redevelopment. It is my hope that these photographs capture the vitality of a neighborhood during its final moments, as it ceases to exist without having been given a choice otherwise.
