University of Missouri

These photographs are part of a series documenting black homicide victimization in Columbia, Missouri. Columbia, Missouri is a college town situated exactly halfway between St. Louis and Kansas City, the state's two largest cities. It is a cultural and economic hub in the middle of an otherwise rural landscape, and it is generally regarded as a quiet and safe environment for families and university students. However, in recent years a rise in violence, suspected to be gang-related, has shaken the community. These photographs explore the spaces where blacks have fallen victim to homicide. They remind us that violence against blacks is an ongoing epidemic not only affecting urban metropolises.
